A contemporary instrumental Native
American violin/flute CD about animals and their totem meanings. The selections
blend classical with Celtic and Jazz styles to describe musically the power
and characteristics of the animals.
ARVEL
BIRD
This Native/Bluegrass/Celtic artist and label, who make
their music available as a fund-raising tool to non-profit organizations that
conserve, preserve, and heal earth's natural resources, garnered a NAMMY nomination
for the bluegrass-y Fiddle Tunes for the Birds. This time, 12 cuts
of Native/New Age/Gypsy/Jazz/Flamenco each represent an animal - Turtle, Horse,
Elk, Wolf, Buffalo, Whale, Eagle, and others.
Most of the music is not exactly impressionistic; rather it conveys a sensitivity
that matches the liner notes' brief description. Elk, for example, symbolizes
strength and nobility," which is conveyhed by deeply-toned music. Bird
composed most of the tracks and leads on violin and flutes. Others contribute
percussion, bass, keyboards, guitar, piano, and additional strings. It is
a nice mix - both of instruments and moods.
Native sound comes through in many rhythums and flute tones, while the violin
can evoke Euro-Latin or even bluegrass/jazz. Beats and harmonies also deliver
occasional jazz flavors. Energized, earthy and appealing.
